In Vedic Astrology the Lagna or Ascendant is the significant moment of contact between the soul and its new life in this world. The ‘Lagna’ also referred to as ‘Lagnnesh’ tell us about strength, activeness and strong immunity of any individual. This is done through the sign and house in which it is placed along with its Nakshatra or constellation. The position of Lagna indicates the areas of life that are balanced and auspicious.
Lagna is also referred to as Ascendant-that is the entry point into this life. Lagna consists of two elements-time and space, so the astrologer always specifies the exact time of your birth and the place of birth for the correct analysis of any birth chart. The absence of correct time gives way for the rectification of the birth time for the accurate chart analysis. Janma Lagna or Birth Ascendant is your pivot point. The other lagnas that arise as the supporting lines for analysing the birth chart are-
Lagna means an auspicious moment in time, indicating the events of one’s birth or the rising sign in the eastern horizon at the time of birth. During a day, all the 12 zodiac signs raise consequently one after other after every 2 hours. Therefore two individuals that take birth on the same day will fall under different Lagna; or with different degrees under the same Lagna.
Lagna refers to the beginning of the 1st astrological house out of all 12 houses in the horoscope. Some of the other important names for the 1st house are: Lagna (coming together), Murti (form), Anga (limb), Tanu (physical body), Udaya (name and fame], Vapu (body), Kalpa (head or intelligence), Adya (beginning).
The first house is your physical entity that defines your personality, intelligence and nature. This is influenced by the rising ascendant or lagna and planets positioned in the 1st house or the planets aspecting it. The nakshatra they fall in indicate the overall strength of the first house that decides the traits of your ascendant and the significations of the first house are formed accordingly.
Lagna represents the self in this material existence of the birth chart and also in all the other divisional charts that are referred for the accurate study of any specific event. For example- thought process, marriage (D-9), progeny (D-7), career and stability (D-10).
Lagna lord or the planet ruling the Lagna is strong; it blesses the native with good intelligence with confidence and strong personality with the ability of having the wisdom to take decisions with marked strength without any fear. So Lagna shows how your brain or intelligence is configured.
The ability of the Lagna lord to protect the Lagna or self depends on its placements in the Kendra (auspicious) house that will endow the individual with good physical health, confidence and all positive potentials in life. Lagna lord placements in the shadowy houses like 6th, 8th, and 12th is not auspicious for the strength of the individual as one will have to face drawbacks in health, less confidence and low decision ability.
The natural significator for the Lagna is Sun. Therefore, it represents our self, soul and the strength of physical and emotional wellbeing. So well placed Sun in the Lagna can give you good resources with good health; but a weak Sun may not give you the ability to make the best use of the available facilities.
Afflictions of the planets to Lagna or Lagna lord in any manner will negatively impact the individual’s discrimination, judgement, intelligence and can also bring health/longevity/reputation issues.
Astrology has the general remedy for any type of an affliction and to strengthen the blessing and protection of the lagna of any horoscope. Worship the lord of the Lagna or the significator of the Lagna.
There are 12 houses in Vedic Astrology and Lagna is the first house that is considered the identity of any horoscope or birth chart that can depict the individual’s characteristics to a great extent from analysing the Lagna.
